Golden berry: the peruvian superfruit with the same active compound as Ashwagandha (and many other super healthy benefits!)

Golden berry (Physalis peruviana), also known as Aguayamanto or Inca Berry, is a yellow fruit native of the Peruvian Andes that also grows in Colombia and Ecuador and even in South Africa where it’s known as Cape gooseberry. It comes from the Solanaceae family (as Ashwagandha) and it’s considered a superfruit for its many health benefits: it has powerful anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antioxidant properties boosting our immune system, helping to detoxify our body, preventing viral infections, aiding in minimizing cellular aging and lowering stress, anxiety, physical and mental fatigue and depression.

Along with other super berries, like camu camu, acai and maqui berry (all ingredients of our BLOOM blend), golden berries are a good source of vitamin C.  Vitamin C is vital for our health and helps to boost  immunity and cognitive function, support blood, bones, ligaments and  tendons, reduce inflammation and promote collagen production in the  skin.

Natural vitamin C (which we use in our BLOOM superpowder) obtained from whole plant-based options such as Camu Camu and Golden berry, is more beneficial than synthetically created ascorbic acid or “sodium ascorbate” supplements. When used in high doses, lab-created Ascorbic acid  is a highly unstable substance and a pro-oxidant (the opposite of an antioxidant) that can lead  to the formation of kidney stones as the body is not able to recognize it and absorb it correctly. On the contrary, natural vitamin C has a complete structure of compounds including bioflavonoids and enzymes that boost its bioavailability, making it easily recognizable by the body  and effectively utilized.

Golden berry is also a natural, food-based source of melatonin –a hormonal substance that helps to improve sleep and reduce neurodegenerative diseases–  and withanolides –the natural steroids that are the main active compounds in the widely used adaptogen Ashwagandha–.

Withanolides have a wide range of health properties including adaptogenic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, sedative/anxiolytic, cytotoxic, antitussive, and immunomodulatory. As adaptogens, they help the body adapt to stress by improving the health of the adrenal system. This, in turn, can reduce feelings of anxiety and irritability. Over time, adaptogens have been linked to better emotional well being.

Because of the multiple benefits of Physalis Peruviana, we have included it in our BLOOM antioxidant superpowder to support the adrenal system, lower stress and boost immunity. We consciously source this ingredient from the Peruvian Andes where it’s harvested at maximum potency and immediately freeze dried to maintain its qualities and nutrients until it reaches your body.
